Northland Transportation Alliance, on behalf of Far North District Council are currently reviewing speed limits in the Kerikeri Bay of Islands area, extending between Opua in the south to Whangaroa in the north, and east of State Highway 10.
We would like to extend an opportunity to iwi and marae within the review area to provide feedback on our proposals. As part of this process, I would like to invite you to either provide written feedback by Emailing me directly, or alternatively, I am more than happy to meet with you, or your Marae to discuss the proposals and provide additional information about the speed limit review.
I can be contacted by email at: shawn.baker@nta.govt.nz
or by phone on 09 430 4200 (business hours).
This review is part of an ongoing rolling review of speed limits across Northland. The goal of the review is to set safe and appropriate speed limits on our roads and to reduce the number of serious injuries and fatal crashes in Northland. The review is part of a nationwide programme of speed limit reviews being undertaken as part of the National road Safety Strategy “Road to Zero”.
Under the new Rule (May 2022), we are now able to set more safe and appropriate speed limits (either permanent or variable) in the vicinity of Marae and Urupa. A safe and appropriate speed can include a permanent slower speed limit or a variable speed limit that reflects how the Marae is used. To ensure that we land on the most appropriate speed limit solutions for Marae and Urupa, we need to better understand how the Marae is utilised (how often etc) and how people interact with the road environment (For example: is there significant parking on the road, or do people congregate or cross the road). You feedback on these matters would be greatly appreciated.
In addition to Marae and Urupa, we are also interested in any feedback you may have on our wider proposals.
To assist, I have attached a copy of our Statement of Proposal, which sets out the review area and proposed speed limits. Additional information is available on Councils Website at www.fndc.govt.nz/haveyoursay
